Trip to Africa - Bourke's Luck Potholes

October 18, 2019
We spent most of the day on our bus travelling to Johannesburg.

We did see some beautiful African scenery, especially in the Mpumalanga Province of Blyde River Canyon.

This is our bus. It was large comfortable and modern.  We had it all through this half of the trip.  It's a nice way to travel when you want to sight see along the way.

Our Gate 1 tour guide was Peter Hess.  He's a South African native for many generations.  His ancestors were Boer South African, of Dutch decent.  He told a lot of stories and gave a lot of background information, which was great and made it all the more interesting.

Along the way at one rest stop we saw these Gemsbok.

Also these two Kudu.  They also had a small herd of Rhinoceros.

Inside they had some life size statues of animals.  This is the type of Rhinoceros they have there, both the black rhino and the white rhino.  The white rhino is not called that because of its color, but because it is wide, and the word for wide in the Boer language is close to white in English.

The African Elephants are unbelievably large.
Along the way we stopped at Bourke's Luck Potholes in Ehlanzeni and saw some amazing canyons.

Strange geological formations like something you might expect to see on Mars.

We got to walk around quite a bit and it was a beautiful place.  A nice break from the bus drive.

These canyons were formed by raging streams the grow and subside depending on the rainfall.

 It was an amazing place.

They have some of the most beautiful scenery.

Driving on we went through Petrolia.  We came to another rest stop. I included this stuffed leopard since leopards are so hard to fully see and appreciate they are so elusive in the wild.

Lion making a kill with an unfortunate Impala.  We did see some get close to doing this in Kruger.  But the Impala got away.  Eventually we reached Johannesburg, our destination for the next few nights.
