Trip to Africa - River Preserve, Hippos, Zulu Dance

October 14, 2019
The next day we took an airplane from Cape Town to Duban, then rode a bus to St. Lucia.  Here we got to go to a River Game Preserve and do a river ride to see our first big animals.

These were the river boats we were riding on.  We had a refreshments there and then went looking for hippopotamuses.

Our first sighting was a group across the river clustered under some overbrush.

Video of some Hippos.

We saw a lot on the ride, about six or seven families, or pods.

In a pod there's usually one dominant male and several females and the calves.

Sometimes the males would challenge the boat to move on.

We saw a lot of hippos and also a few crocodiles.

Another video of the hippos.

Back at the hotel we had a big dinner of elk venison and lamb and then got to see a Zulu dance performance.  Lots of loud drums and kicking and stomping and yelling.

Video of one of the Zulu dances.

Some of us were drafted to join in on part of it.

Interesting beetle that lives in the dung of the hippos.
